Jardine’s Fish with Nicholas Aldridge
In 1833 Sir William Jardine the Scottish naturalist began editing his forty volume Naturalist’s Library. The Edinburgh printer and engraver William Home Lizars issued the series. They divided the books into four main sections: Ornithology, Mammalogy, Entomology, and Ichthyology. In doing so they made natural history available to almost all levels of society. Every book contains detailed hand coloured illustrations. Today these books and images are all but forgotten.
Nicholas Aldridge used his time in the Lockdowns to rediscover some of their work and Jardine’s Fish will take us to a forgotten world of the people and fish behind it. The evening will involve time travel, a black hole and other events. So please bring suitable refreshment for the buffet at the end of the voyage.
Nick’s Short Biography
Nick is Dorset born and bred with some Hampshire support. As a lad, he would spend perhaps too much time exploring the shores and bays of Poole Harbour and further beyond. Fishing was genetically imprinted and he’s met some extraordinary people over the years in the UK and abroad especially during the time he spent in Palawan as an Agriculturalist with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas).
In recent years he’s rekindled his love of the outdoors and spends time exploring the Dorset coast.
In 2022 his exhibition High and Dry ‘The Almost Forgotten World of the Late Georgian and Early Victorian Artists and Engravers’ premiered at the Dorset Wildlife Trust Fine Foundation Centre in Kimmeridge. This presentation is a follow on to that event.
