A Grayling evening with Steve Skuce

Thrilled to have Steve come and talk to us all, a great presentation followed by tying a few flies from his book “Grayling Flies” which will be on sale along with some of his furled leaders..

Steve’s Short Biography

Steve Skuce is a staunch Lancastrian born in Bolton in 1946, the son of a cotton spinner.

As a lad, he would strap his rod to the crossbar of his bike, grab a jam butty, a bottle of Tizer and a bag of Smith’s crisps and pedal off to one of many cotton mill lodges in the area to fish for perch.

He bought his first fly rod in 1968 and fished for a season, unsuccessfully, in the River Wear in Durham City.

Marriage, family and a career in consumer goods marketing meant he had little time to continue fly fishing for some years.

His interest was re-kindled in 1983 and two years later he caught his first grayling whilst fishing the mighty River Test.  Since then he has caught grayling in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and the USA.

He was an officer of the Grayling Society for over 20 years retiring from the Chairmanship in 2016.

He also guided on the chalkstream for some years, after retiring from his ‘real’ job, and has taught fly tying at his local Fly Dresser’s Guild branch.

In 2016 his book ‘Grayling Flies’ was published by Coch-y-Bonddu Books and has sold reasonably well.

He lives with his wife Honor, who also fishes, in the village of Wylye in deepest, darkest Wiltshire where he is overwhelmingly happy!  He still likes to dash off to the hills though and can often be found on Dartmoor molesting wild brownies or in Wales, the Midlands or ‘Up North’ chasing after her ladyship!

There will also be at least two tables selling second hand tackle, flies and books.

  • Please bring a plate of good food to pop on the buffet table, a bottle of your favourite tipple, or grab a drink from the Wise Man Inn
  • Bring along any of your unwanted tackle, flies and books to sell on the second hand tackle table, and if you would like to have a stand (FOC), just give me a ring  01305 257490 or ping me an email –  john@riverworks.co.uk
  • Please bring friends along to meet fellow chalk stream and fly fisher folk.
  • News on meetings coming over this winter. Could you please avoid parking in the pub car park, use the village hall car park, in front of the pub or please park at our house (The Dairy House, map at the bottom of this link) just a short walk from the village.  Entrance for this winters gatherings will again be freeof charge.
